Gray Zone Warfare aims to significantly reshape its gameplay experience with Rogue Ops (Update 0.5), introducing new progression mechanics, additional activities, and major improvements to enemy AI in the tactical extraction shooter. Gaming-Sanctum participated in MADFINGER Games’ closed press preview on October 16, getting hands-on experience with the new content ahead of its public release on October 22.

Until now, gameplay has primarily revolved around completing missions, engaging in combat, and collecting equipment, a gameplay loop that could gradually become repetitive. Rogue Ops attempts to bring greater depth to this experience by introducing the Hideout, crafting, and new economic activities. Our first impressions suggest an update with meaningful additions, although several weaknesses still need to be addressed.

Hideout, Crafting, and Economy – Rogue Ops Gives Players a New Reason to Explore Gray Zone Warfare

The most significant addition in Rogue Ops is the Hideout, a personal progression space that gives new value to the items collected during exploration. Initially, it consists of three facilities: the Laboratory, Electronics Workshop, and Utility Room. Each serves a different purpose and can be upgraded to level three.

The Laboratory allows players to produce pharmaceuticals and other substances needed to complete contracts. Operating it requires specialized equipment and raw materials found across different areas of Lamang, as well as prior upgrades to the facilities. In the Electronics Workshop, we can dismantle items and use their components to craft new equipment through gradually unlocked recipes and production processes with varying completion times. One notable addition is the hacking tool, available in three tiers, which allows players to bypass electronic locks and access previously inaccessible areas. Finally, the Utility Room supplies the electricity required to operate the other facilities, although its functionality remains limited for now.

The most meaningful change concerns how loot is used. Items that previously held value primarily for resale can now contain materials required for facility upgrades or equipment crafting. As a result, exploration gains more specific objectives beyond searching for valuable items and better weapons. At the same time, changes to loot distribution and the reduced availability of high-value items require more careful resource management.

However, gathering essential materials can be particularly time-consuming, especially during the early stages of Hideout development. The lack of sufficient clues about where these materials might be found can lead to repeated searches without meaningful progress. Therefore, finding the right balance between resource scarcity and the time required to obtain materials will be crucial to the system’s long-term effectiveness.

The Hideout is still in its initial stage of development. MADFINGER Games plans to introduce additional facilities, further upgrade levels, and new research capabilities connected to the mysteries of Ground Zero. Rogue Ops lays the foundation for these developments without yet offering the full range of planned features.

Smuggling and New Activities – More Options, Greater Risks

The new Smuggling and Hunting activities expand progression opportunities by offering additional ways to earn money and improve trader reputation. Both are connected to new missions and contracts, while Smuggling, in particular, makes use of items produced through the Hideout, creating an alternative source of income.

Through Vulture, players can accept illegal goods trafficking contracts that offer substantial rewards but also involve greater risks. In contrast, Lab Rat allows players to use the same raw materials to manufacture pharmaceutical products intended for hospitals and other facilities. These two paths provide different ways to operate within the game’s economy, while our decisions can positively or negatively affect our reputation with traders.

Smuggling is directly connected to the new Hunting system, introducing a different form of PvP activity. When a player accepts a contract to transport illegal cargo, Hunting zones appear on the map, informing rival factions of the general area where the mission is taking place. Hunters can track down and intercept the courier, earning experience and trader reputation. This gives encounters a clear objective, with one side attempting to complete the delivery within the time limit while the other tries to prevent it. Route selection, preparation, and equipment management become increasingly important, as a delivery can quickly turn into an unpredictable confrontation. In PvE, couriers face AI-controlled enemies instead of opposing players.

Meanwhile, Vulture’s role has been expanded, as he now operates as a regular trader rather than being exclusively associated with Combat Outposts. This makes his services more accessible and strengthens his position within the game’s overall economy.

Another important change is the ability to create up to four characters, each with separate progression and options for PvE or PvEvP, depending on faction restrictions. This allows players to experiment with different playstyles without having to abandon the progress of their main character.

Update 0.5 introduces a soft wipe instead of a complete progression reset. Players retain their completed missions, rank, unlocked clothing, trader levels, and statistics from Update 0.4, but lose the money and equipment stored in their locker. When entering Rogue Ops for the first time, they must choose whether to transfer their existing progress to PvE or PvEvP. This decision is permanent, while the character’s faction remains unchanged.

Gunplay, Equipment, and Survival – Realism Remains at the Core

Gray Zone Warfare: Rogue Ops – Armed confrontation on a city street, with soldiers taking cover, gunfire, and an explosion in the background.

Despite the new activities, armed combat and detailed equipment management remain at the heart of Gray Zone Warfare. The weapon system continues to be one of the game’s greatest strengths, offering customization options that go far beyond simply changing sights or magazines. Players can modify numerous individual components, significantly influencing each weapon’s configuration.

Rogue Ops introduces seven new weapons — AUG, Benelli M4, G3, G36, FAMAS, UMP, and Glock 18C — alongside 370 weapon components, new color variants, optics, magnifiers, and rare configurations. MADFINGER has also changed how weapons are distributed, making the equipment we encounter more consistent with the locations we explore and the enemies we face. Most new weapons must now be obtained through exploration and looting rather than purchased directly from traders. This makes acquiring specific weapons more challenging, although excessive scarcity could lead to unnecessary and repetitive searches.

During combat, aiming, breath control, and positioning remain crucial. Holding aim for extended periods reduces weapon stability, while movement and pressure make it harder to maintain accuracy. Firefights can end within seconds, rewarding patience and careful positioning rather than constant aggression. The suppression effect also returns, heightening the sense of danger when coming under fire without the heavy full-screen blur that characterized its previous implementation. The effects of certain ammunition types on injuries have also been adjusted, although their effectiveness still requires further balancing, as enemies surviving powerful hits can undermine the game’s sense of realism.

The health system has also undergone significant changes, allowing injuries to be treated by body part rather than requiring players to address each wound individually. Bleeding still demands immediate attention, but the adjustments provide more time to react. Medical items now have more clearly differentiated functions and are consumed according to the amount needed for treatment. This makes healing easier to understand without diminishing the importance of proper preparation with bandages, hemostatic agents, splints, and blood supplies.

Survival, however, involves more than treating injuries. Hunger, thirst, and other physical conditions can seriously affect the character, reinforcing the game’s demanding nature. However, when multiple conditions and needs accumulate, constantly managing them can place an excessive burden on the pace of gameplay.

MADFINGER’s challenge remains finding the right balance between realism and usability. Complex mechanics are an important part of Gray Zone Warfare’s identity, but they should enhance the tension and strategic depth of missions rather than become a source of unnecessary frustration for players.

Enemy AI – A More Lifelike and Dangerous World

Gray Zone Warfare: Rogue Ops – Two armed soldiers take cover inside a wooden building, watching enemies through the windows.

Changes to enemy behavior are among the most significant additions in Rogue Ops, affecting both the atmosphere of Lamang and the difficulty of combat encounters. NPCs now display a wider range of everyday behaviors, including smoking, using mobile phones, having conversations, and resting when they do not perceive a threat. As a result, they no longer feel like static targets but rather characters going about their activities within the world. These behaviors can also reveal their positions, as the light from a lighter or mobile phone becomes visible at night. Their posture and the way they hold their weapons also provide clues about their level of readiness.

During combat, enemies can make use of cover, attempt flanking maneuvers, and react to suspicious sounds, such as a door opening or movements that give away our position. They have also gained the ability to use bandages to stop bleeding, meaning an injured enemy can treat their wounds and return to the fight if given enough time.

Certain enemy groups now use grenades as well, putting greater pressure on players who remain in the same position. However, the accuracy with which they can throw them, particularly in conditions of limited visibility, raises balancing concerns, as players may be left with very little time to react. Their improved shooting accuracy also requires careful balancing to ensure that increased difficulty does not simply result from excessively effective reflexes.

Despite these improvements, the AI still has weaknesses, particularly when selecting and using cover over long distances. Its overall quality depends not only on enemy accuracy but also on environmental awareness, responses to threats, and cooperation during combat encounters.

Lamang Expands – New Locations, Missions, and Exploration

Gray Zone Warfare: Rogue Ops – A large radio telescope overlooking military facilities surrounded by dense tropical vegetation in Lamang.

Rogue Ops significantly expands the world of Gray Zone Warfare by introducing three new high-difficulty (Tier 4) areas: Lakevale Sanctuary, an asylum; Northern Reach, a military research facility; and RLSL-1, a radio observatory. Each location has its own distinct identity, new missions, and story elements, while enclosed spaces, limited escape routes, and dangerous enemies demand a cautious approach.

More than 15 smaller locations have also been added, including hidden jungle facilities, abandoned buildings, Khmer temple ruins, and underground passages. New items, audio recordings, interactive televisions, traps, and environmental puzzles enrich exploration, providing more opportunities to uncover what happened on Lamang. Additional Main Tasks, Long-Term Contracts, and missions connected to the new activities further expand the available content, giving even experienced players who have already invested many hours in the game more options.

The map expansion could also help reduce congestion in older areas, as new rewards and activities encourage players to travel to different parts of the island. Changes to Combat Outposts follow a similar direction. Larger outposts can no longer be captured and temporarily function as regular locations, while others have been relocated. The aim is to reduce the concentration of PvP encounters around specific bases and encourage more spontaneous confrontations across the map.

Visually, Lamang remains one of the game’s strongest elements. Dense tropical vegetation, settlements, military installations, and changing lighting conditions create an environment that demands constant attention. At night in particular, the absence of suitable night-vision equipment or lighting can make even a simple journey dangerous, highlighting the importance of preparation beyond weapon-handling skills.

Improvements to the sky, clouds, and weather conditions further enhance the atmosphere, with storms and lighting changes having a noticeable impact on visibility.

Technical Performance – Rogue Ops Brings Improvements, but Gray Zone Warfare Still Has Work Ahead

With Rogue Ops, MADFINGER upgrades Gray Zone Warfare to Unreal Engine 5.7, aiming to improve performance on both players’ PCs and the game’s servers. According to the developer, these changes deliver approximately 10% higher FPS, while memory issues, crashes, and severe momentary performance drops have also been addressed. Meanwhile, the integration of the Iris network replication system aims to reduce server load, freeing up additional resources for AI processing.

Despite these improvements, technical performance remains particularly important for a game featuring long viewing distances, dense vegetation, and demanding networked gameplay. Actual performance varies depending on hardware, graphics settings, and the conditions of each session. Issues such as image blurriness, ghosting when using certain optics, delayed texture loading, and inconsistencies in visual quality still require attention. In a tactical shooter, frame-time stability is just as important as average FPS, as even a momentary delay can affect the outcome of a firefight.

Audio has also received improvements, including updated sound effects for the M4 and AK, changes to how distant gunfire is reproduced, and additional NPC voices and sounds. These adjustments enhance both the atmosphere and players’ ability to detect threats, as gunshots, footsteps, and enemy movements provide valuable information about the surrounding environment.

MADFINGER has also strengthened its anti-cheat measures by introducing internal detection systems and stricter penalties. However, their effectiveness can only be properly assessed over time, once the update has been adopted by the wider community.

Gray Zone Warfare: Rogue Ops – First Impressions: A Meaningful Step in the Right Direction

Our first impressions of Rogue Ops are positive. Update 0.5 represents one of the most significant upgrades to Gray Zone Warfare to date, bringing meaningful depth and more gameplay options. Despite the weaknesses that remain in the balance of its mechanics and its technical performance, MADFINGER’s direction is encouraging. The key question now is whether these improvements will be enough to maintain players’ interest over the long term.

Gray Zone Warfare: Rogue Ops has been available to Supporter Edition owners since October 19, while the public release of Update 0.5 is scheduled for October 22, 2026, exclusively on PC via Steam.
